English, public speaking or taekwondo: choosing an enrichment class in Klang

SunnySeeds runs four enrichment classes: Cambridge English, kids public speaking, kids taekwondo and the Weekend Bonding Atelier, a Saturday class for a parent and child together. This guide sets out what each one is, who it suits by age and format, and what to ask before you choose.

The short answer

Start with what your child enjoys and what your week allows, then check the age and format. Cambridge English is structured English language practice for ages 4 to 8. Kids public speaking is practice in preparing and giving short talks, for ages 5 to 12. Kids taekwondo is a weekly class for ages 4 to 12 on Thursday afternoons. The Weekend Bonding Atelier is different from all three: one parent takes part with their child, aged 2 to 4, on Saturday mornings. Fees, places and some class times are not listed here, so ask us about the class you are considering.

About this guide. It compares the four enrichment classes SunnySeeds Academy runs, using the facts on our own class pages. It is not a review of other providers, and it does not promise any result from a class.

English practice or speaking practice?

Cambridge English and public speaking both involve talking, but they practise different things.

Cambridge English

Works on the language itself: listening, speaking, reading and writing in English, with phonics, in groups of up to 10 children.

Kids public speaking

Works on preparing and giving a talk to an audience. Each level has 6 classes and 1 presentation, on topics such as storytelling, a dream job or a product review, with a trainer certified by Johan Speaking Academy.

Some children want more English, some want more chances to speak in front of others, and some enjoy both. If you are unsure, think about which one your child asks about, or tell us what you have noticed and we can explain each class.

Three different kinds of Cambridge English

Cambridge English with phonics is already part of our nursery, preschool and kindergarten day. The enrichment class is a separate, standalone English class for ages 4 to 8. Qualification preparation is a third thing: from age 6, children can prepare for a Cambridge English Qualification according to their level. Preparing is not the same as sitting the exam, and no exam or certificate comes automatically, so ask us whether your child is ready, and about exam dates, registration and any exam fee. Our Cambridge English page explains how the levels work.

Your child takes part, or you both do?

In Cambridge English, public speaking and taekwondo, your child is the one taking part, with a teacher, trainer or coach. If you would like to know whether parents stay nearby during these classes, ask us. The Weekend Bonding Atelier is different: it is not a drop off class. One parent takes part alongside their child, aged 2 to 4, for two hours on a Saturday morning, guided by an early childhood educator, with one facilitator for six parent and child pairs. The facilitator shows you ways to talk, play and respond to your child, so you leave with play ideas to repeat at home.

So the choice is partly about your child and partly about you: a class your child takes part in, or two hours you take part in together.

Start with your child's interests

  • Loves to move? Kids taekwondo is an active, physical class led by Coach Khee Boon, whom the school describes as a 4th Dan black belt. Our taekwondo page has the coach's details.
  • Loves to talk, perform or tell stories? Public speaking gives regular chances to prepare and present, with 1 presentation in each level.
  • Curious about English, or you would like more English in the week? Cambridge English is structured language practice in small groups.
  • Aged 2 to 4, and you would like time together? The Weekend Bonding Atelier is play based, with messy art, music exploration, simple movement and hands on discovery.

A class your child looks forward to is easier to keep going with. These classes are not therapy or an assessment, and no class can promise a particular change in your child. If you have concerns about your child's development, speech or hearing, talk to your doctor.

Then check your week

  • Thursday afternoons: taekwondo runs from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Think about who brings your child and picks them up.
  • Saturday mornings: the Atelier runs from 10am to 12pm and needs one parent there for the whole session.
  • Times to ask about: for Cambridge English and public speaking, ask us for the current schedule before you plan around them. Public speaking classes are held in person in Aman Perdana and online.
  • Starting dates: a public speaking class needs at least three children to start, so ask when the next group begins.

Match the age and the group

Child's ageClasses to consider
2 to 3Weekend Bonding Atelier, with a parent
4Weekend Bonding Atelier, with a parent; Cambridge English; kids taekwondo
5 to 8Cambridge English; kids public speaking; kids taekwondo
9 to 12Kids public speaking; kids taekwondo
Older than 12Ask us whether a suitable public speaking group is available

Group sizes differ too: up to six children per trainer in public speaking, ten per teacher or coach in Cambridge English and taekwondo, and six parent and child pairs per facilitator in the Atelier. Public speaking also places children by ability, in two tracks: Kiddos for ages 5 to 8 and Kids for ages 7 to 12.

What this guide does not confirm

Fees, what a fee includes, places available now and whether a trial class is possible are not published here, and we give the Cambridge English and public speaking times on request. Questions worth asking about any class:

  • What is the current day and time, and when does the next intake start?
  • What is the fee, what does it include, and is anything paid separately?
  • Is there a place for my child now?
  • What should my child wear or bring?
  • Can my child try a class first?

The printable comparison sheet below puts the four classes on one page, with space for the answers.
